The novel The Fault In Our stars by John Green follows Hazel Grace Lancaster as she battles terminal lung cancer. Despite the constant worry of her condition she finds love in the form of Augustus Waters. A survivor. They bond over their similarities and the love for the same book “An imperial affliction, they share a bittersweet adventure of a lifetime in Amsterdam and find that happiness can be found in the dullest of places .This novel accompanys the two star crossed lovers as they find out more about each other and the harsh, unfair world they live in.
A character in the novel I found interesting was Augustus Waters (Gus) because although he only has one real leg and is in love with a terminally ill girl he has a positive outlook on life. He is always smiling and making jokes, he shows he cares about people and isn’t scared to show his emotions, I think Gus is interesting as his character is well structured and has a strong reliable personality. He knows where his power stands in the big wide world, he like to feel in control and enjoys his metaphors “its a metaphor see, you put the killing thing right between your teeth but you never give it the power to kill you” This quotes shows Gus has found a sense of control over his cancer.
A message I took from the text is not to take life or the ones you love for granted. I believe John Green is trying to get this message across as he shows how quickly someone can be taken from your life and uses this theme throughout the entire novel to show that Gus is done waiting to live, he’s over staying at home with his parents, he wants to feel alive, alive with hazel Grace. “You realise that trying to keep your distance from me will not lessen my affection for you. All efforts to save me from you will fail” I strongly believe this quote shows Gus just wants to be with Hazel and wants to give them both a chance to live before the undeniable truth breaks their world.
A huge challenge the characters had to face during this novel was their ongoing battles with cancer and not knowing what the future holds for themselves and their relationship. This challenge proved difficult through many aspects of the novel in many ways such as the many doctors appointments that kept them apart and that Hazel wouldn’t let herself get too close to Gus as she feared she would hurt him. This challenge was overcome when Hazel realised that life’s too short and that death is inevitable and everyone gets hurt and feels pain. She wanted the chance to live and feel love. Gus knows he could get hurt but just wants to make the most of the time they do have together.
The Line “The Fault In Our Stars” is actually a line from the Shakespeare play Julius Caesar. However when used in the play by Shakespeare the line actually meant “nothing is to blame for all of the world’s evil-nature but ourselves”. However John Green portrays this line as its up to fate, such as how fate brought Hazel and Augustus together. And that the the fault was not in the stars but in Augustas and Hazel Grace, the lies they told each other.
I would recommend this novel to teenagers aged between 13 and 18 who enjoys a sweet teen romance, not only is this book a classic love story of two cancer patients but an example of a heartfelt drama.
