offical essay

A memorable idea in the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell is support, support is frequently used to show unique relationships between animals, a key example of support is the way squealer always had Napoleon’s back through thick and thin, also when benjamin couldn’t bare to leave Boxer alone while he was injured and finally when all the animals supported Old Major when he told everyone about his detailed dream concerning the upcoming rebellion and in some ways he supported them back.

Without Squealer Napoleon would be nothing. Although a tough vile pig he would not have any control over Animal Farm, he is very fortunate to have squealer as a loyal and trustworthy companion, squealer does a great deal of Napoleon’s dirty work expecting nothing in return, it’s important to understand that Squealer could graciously take over Animal Farm in a number of minutes based on his “well spoken” manor and persuasiveness but the main reason he hasn’t is because of how much he cares about and looks up to Napoleon, he doesn’t want to see him fail because of how far he has already come, even if that means doing most of the labor. I believe what makes this relationship so unique and memorable is that Squealer without realising is Napoleon’s only true friend and gets to be alongside his Best friend everyday.

Benjamin and Boxer shared a friendship like no other they were as close as brothers and would support each other through everything, although a very reserved character he could always rely on Boxer to help clear his mind, this is a memorable supportive friendship because of how powerfully they care for each other, throughout the novel Animal Farm, Benjamin is conceived as an old grumpy Donkey however he trusts Boxer, near the end of the novel when Boxer is being taken to the “horse slaughterer” Benjamin was the first to react to the sign on the back of the van, I believe this moment in time was truly heartbreaking for Benjamin as he was losing the only animal who truly cared and took the time to get to know him for who he was and all he could do was watch. George Orwell successfully paired Boxer and Benjamin to show the true meaning of friendship and how your always better together.

Old Major had a dream, a dream about an extraordinary rebellion, all the animals were intrigued and listening with respect they allowed Old Major to share his dream and opinion, even once old major had passed he still supported the animals in a way, he gave them the courage to stand up for what was right,I believe that even though he was no longer with them Old Major supplied the most support than any other animal mentioned in Animal farm, he gave them the golden idea and they followed through in his honor. George Orwell had old major die in the beginning of the novel to indicate that he had a lot to do with the rebellion even though he was not there to actually witness it just like Karl Marx how supplied the idea but was not fully involved himself. “Weak or strong, clever or simple, we animals are all brother” matches the meaning of this quote taken from the Communist Manifesto book, “That when all are equal there would be no ruler over anyone since ownership of everything would be mutual of all the people in that society” this is an empowering quote from Karl Marx and his view on the russian revolution.

In conclusion I think it is obvious that support is one of the most memorable ideas in Animal farm as every animal shares a strong relationship with another, support is shown in everyday situations and is an important way to show you care. Not only is support shown in Animal Farm but also in real life situations all around the world as shown above all animals got something out of supporting another like Benjamin when he was always by Boxers side he got a best friend, Squealer got to be Napoleon’s right hand pig and Old Major had the rest of the farm animals follow in his footsteps and complete his legacy.

Hi Evie,

You have got a strong idea to work with here.

Remember you need to detail exactly what Orwell did to make your idea (support) memorable. What is it about support that is so memorable? How did Orwell make it memorable? Don’t forget that this novel is based on actual events that happened in real life.

Be careful of your word choices. The meaning of your sentences can be changed quite dramatically by certain words. Make sure it means what you want it to mean. Try to revise your punctuation. There are times where your sentences run on too long and need to be shortened.

Don’t just retell what happens in the story. You need to be discussing what Orwell does to make support so memorable. What does he do in his writing?

You are using the first part of SEXY structure quite well. Just don’t forget the Y. Discuss the author’s purpose (what he wanted to say and how he did it), a connection to the world outside the novel and then link it back to your first statement.

Keep going. You can do it!
