The age of Adaline directed by Lee Toland Krieger is a heartbreaking film that follows a beautiful young lady who is unable to age, after surviving a life changing car crash at the age of 29 where her heart momentarily stopped beating, Adaline is trapped in her young body. Now, with only one person alive that knows her secret, Adaline is now on the run from the past. But she will soon have to make the decision if its still worth hiding when she finds a charming young man and his connections to her past.
A character I found interesting in the movie ‘the age of Adaline’ was William Jones. William was in love with Adaline many years before he married and had children. He took no time to quickly identify the mysterious, beautiful young woman his son had brought home as his girlfriend. William knew this was Adaline but understands they could no longer be together as he had aged 40 years while she was still the daring 29 year old he had admired many years ago, and had now unknowing fallen for his son, Ellis. William is an appealing character as he puts others before himself, he cares for his son but loves Adaline enough not to share her deep secret, “All these years you’ve lived but you’ve never had a life. He tells Ellis if he truly loves her he needs to do whatever it takes to not let her disappear and change her identity again.
A message I took from the text was whatever happened in your past should not change your future. Adaline bowman was always on the run. She ran from the authorities, people she cared about and herself. She changed her identity so many times, it soon meant nothing to her than a name. It was her new normal. She was scared, she didn’t want to be caught, experimented on. So she ran. All she wanted was a normal life but it was far from normal, she was stuck somewhere she didn’t want to be, trapped in a time she shouldn’t be alive in. She hasn’t aged in over eight decades and was ready to give up. She didn’t want to see the people get hurt anymore. This relates to the world as there are so many people that believe that just because of something that happened so long ago mean they can’t do something now, in the present, in Adalines case find love. “Its not the same when theres no growing old together, without love its just heartbreak”
A challenge Adaline was confronted with was her identity. She constantly changed her name and date of birth to hide and fit in when she just wanted to live a normal life with people she loved. Adelines daughter, Flemming, had grown to become an 80 year old woman while Adaline remained a 29 year old woman, she was ashamed she couldnt be the proper mother figure she wanted to be for her daughter. Adaline had to get her daughter, the only person who knew about her true age, to lie for her, Adaline got her to tell people she had moved away and was never coming back. The challenges other characters had to face was getting to know Adaline without her running from them. They just wanted her to feel safe and loved.
The title ‘The Age of Adaline’ is fitting for this movie. Because the actual age of Adaline never changes she is trapped in her 29 year old body for the next eight decades when she really has the brains and wisdom of a 114 year old woman. To me the title ‘The age of Adaline’ is perfect for this movie because many people don’t really know the true age of Adaline bowman so the title to me is really a question like do you know the age of Adaline?
I would recommend this movie to people of all ages who enjoy a true heart throb as this movie is filled with romance, heartbreak and mystery. ‘The Age of Adaline’ follows a lonely young woman who believes her secret is deadly. But is really looking for love and security.
